The True Meaning Of Success

They were addressing an audience of children
A group of middle age men and women
Successful in their own particular fields and ways
Nothing exceptional or extraordinary, one can say
The speakers each gave their talks
Their success stories trying to chalk
Money and fame being the central theme
To the students they tried to explain their scheme
Then the floor was thrown open to questions
And the kids had their doubts and opinions
Their difficult questions needed to be answered
On which the panelists clumsily faltered
Is success just earning money and fame they asked?
Substance is more important all our life we have grasped
Does achievement mean followers and likes?
Or a sense of purpose brings delight?
If accomplishment only means earning a bunch of money
Then none of us should join the air force or army
Being a scientist or inventor is a waste of time
Working in an NGO akin to a crime
Should we then call our mums a failure?
Who gave up their jobs and career
To raise inquisitive and resilient children
Discussing at length and sharing their wisdom
Would you say an army general or forest ranger is unsuccessful?
Or should we assume our teachers haven’t done anything meaningful?
Does being a baker mean you are worthless?
Or running marathons makes your life any less?
If we want to design a product, should we be afraid?
If we want to be a vets, should we be ashamed?
Maybe social service could be our calling
Or a life time spent just trying and exploring
Please don’t think we are stupid and naïve
We know money is important to survive
But that is not how success is measured
It is actually doing what gives you pleasure
To be successful is to fulfil your personal goal and vision
To live a life that is whole and filled with passion
It can’t be measured by wealth and Instagram popularity
But by living a life with purpose, meaning and clarity.
